Hypnotherapy

The NHS states that: Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that employs hypnosis to address various conditions or modify behaviours.

The Collins Dictionary, defines Hypnotherapy as:

Hypnotherapy is the practice of hypnotizing people in order to help them with a mental or physical problem, for example to help them give up smoking.

My own definition is:

A combination of Hypnosis and Therapy which can bring about rapid change in thoughts, feelings and actions.

Abstract Hypnosis

What to Expect During a Hypnotherapy Session

Hypnotherapy sessions can vary widely, incorporating different approaches and techniques to induce hypnosis and the treatments you will receive. Initially, you will have a consultation with your therapist to discuss your goals and determine the appropriate strategies and treatments employed and used during your session.

During the session, your hypnotherapist will usually guide you into a state of deep relaxation and use the agreed-upon methods to assist you in reaching your objectives. For instance, they might suggest ways to help you break undesirable habits. Subsequently, you will be gently brought out of this trance-like state, leaving most individuals feeling rejuvenated and calm. Hypnotherapy is not relaxation, but this is one state that has the highest probability of hypnosis being achieved. Always a good go-to induction for anyone's first session.

It’s important to note that you remain fully in control throughout the hypnosis. You have the freedom to reject the therapist's suggestions if they don’t resonate with you, and you can exit the hypnotic state at any time if needed. Hypnosis is usually only effective if you are open to the process.

Important Consideration

Hypnotherapy may not be suitable for everyone e.g. if you suffer from psychosis or certain types of personality disorders, contact the therapist if you have concerns before pursuing hypnotherapy.

Availability of Hypnotherapy Services

Hypnotherapy is not provided by the NHS, however, you may wish to inquire about Hypnosis and hypnotic treatments and availability in your area through your GP or Doctors surgery. Alternatively  you can search a directory or google the term 'hypnotherapy' or 'hypnotherapist' or 'hypnotherapist near me'.

Choosing a Hypnotherapist

When selecting a private hypnotherapist, consider the following (read an in-depth article here):

  • Research the practitioner for the right background, training and experience.

  • If you have a mental health condition or a serious illness like cancer, ask the hypnotherapist about their experience with such conditions.

  • If seeking therapy for a child, verify that the practitioner is qualified to work with minors i.e. holds a DBS check.

  • Check for registration with a body accredited by the Professional Standards Authority, e.g The NCH or CNHC   and preferably both.

You can locate a qualified hypnotherapist through the Professional Standards Authority website (CNHC above).

The cost of private hypnotherapy (with thoughtlounge Ltd ) sessions start at £90 per hour and may vary based the session length.
