Understanding Hypnotherapy Session Lengths

Writer: Dr Iain LightfootDr Iain Lightfoot

How Long is a Session?
The Therapy Room is a Safe Place to Be you.

As a hypnotherapist in Southampton, Hampshire, I often receive questions about the length of hypnotherapy sessions and why they vary. It's important to understand that different therapists choose session lengths that align with their therapeutic style and approach. While some therapists adhere strictly to one-hour sessions, others might offer extended sessions, sometimes up to three and a half hours, often termed as "rapid change" sessions with a premium fee. However, my approach is slightly different.

In my practice, I prioritise achieving the maximum therapeutic effect in the minimum time necessary. This philosophy shapes how I structure my sessions. Here's a breakdown of how I manage session lengths and why.

Initial Session: Laying the Foundation

The first session is crucial and is always scheduled for two hours. This extended time allows us to cover several essential aspects:

  • Comprehensive History Gathering: Understanding the client's background, the nature of their issues, behavioural patterns, and underlying thought processes.

  • Treatment Planning: Developing a tailored treatment plan that addresses the client's specific needs and sets the stage for effective hypnotherapy.

Spending this time upfront ensures that I have a clear and thorough understanding of the client's situation, which is essential for formulating a successful treatment plan.

Occasionally, if the treatment plan comes together quickly and less time is needed for history gathering, the first session may conclude in about 1 1/2 hours.

Subsequent Hypnotherapy Sessions: Flexible and Efficient

Follow-up sessions are scheduled for up to 1 1/2 hours. The actual length of these sessions can vary:

  • Session Flexibility: They [sessions] might last only an hour if that suffices to cover the necessary therapeutic work for that visit. I believe in efficiency and do not extend sessions unnecessarily. This approach ensures that your time and money are well-utilised, and progress is made without padding out the sessions.

This method is akin to booking a hotel room or a restaurant table. Just because you have reserved the time doesn't mean you need to use every minute of it if the goals have been achieved earlier. This flexibility helps maintain focus on effective therapy rather than simply filling time.

Ethical Considerations in Session Booking

Another aspect I emphasise is the ethical approach to session booking. I have detailed this in another blog, but it’s worth mentioning here:

  • No Block Booking: I do not support block booking multiple sessions in advance. While some therapists might offer packages of 10 sessions, this can lead to issues. What if significant progress is made in just five sessions? Clients might feel obligated to continue unnecessarily, or there might be an expectation that therapy will take all 10 sessions regardless of actual need.

Booking sessions individually ensures that each one is necessary and beneficial. It allows for flexibility and responsiveness to the client's progress, fostering a more ethical and effective therapeutic process.

Closing Position

In summary, my approach to hypnotherapy session lengths is designed to be efficient, ethical, and tailored to each client's needs. By scheduling sessions up to a maximum time and adjusting as necessary, I ensure that every minute is purposeful and contributes to the client's journey towards positive change. This model respects both the client's time and investment, focusing on delivering the best therapeutic outcomes in the most efficient manner possible.
